Custom Cake Sizes, Servings and Prices: A Chandigarh Guide
Almost every awkward conversation about a custom cake comes from the same two questions: how big, and why that price. Here are both answers, in plain numbers.
How much cake do you actually need?
In India cakes are sold by weight, not by diameter, which is genuinely more useful once you know the conversion. The rough rule: one kilogram serves about 10 to 12 people as a celebration slice — the kind you cut after the candles, on a small plate, alongside other food.
Two things move that number. If the cake is dessert after a full meal, slices get smaller and a kilo stretches further. If it is the centrepiece of a tea-time party with children helping themselves, it does not.
| Guests | Order roughly | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 4–6 | 500 g | Small family birthday, anniversary at home |
| 8–12 | 1 kg | The standard birthday cake |
| 15–20 | 1.5–2 kg | Office celebration, larger family gathering |
| 25–30 | 2.5–3 kg | Milestone birthday, engagement |
| 40–50 | 4–5 kg, often tiered | Large party, reception |
| 60+ | Tiered cake, or a smaller display cake plus sheet cakes | Weddings, big corporate events |
What actually drives the price
A custom cake quote is two numbers added together: the cake, and the work on top of it.
1. The base, priced per kilo
This is the predictable half. At Annie's, decorated cakes start at ₹1500/kg, with Nutella at ₹1600/kg. Cheesecakes run ₹1000–1200/kg depending on flavour, brownies ₹1000–1200/kg, and simple tea cakes ₹1000/kg. Flavour matters because ingredients do — a Nutella or Biscoff cake carries a genuinely more expensive component than a vanilla one.
2. The decoration, priced by effort
This is the half that surprises people, and it is entirely about hours. Roughly, from cheapest to dearest:
- Smooth cream or ganache finish with a simple message — minimal premium.
- Piped borders, rosettes, drip finishes, sprinkles — a modest step up.
- Hand-piped florals, printed edible images, themed toppers — more, and depends on detail.
- Fondant work, sculpted shapes, figurines, hand-painting — substantially more; fondant is slow and unforgiving.
- Multi-tier construction — adds internal structure, stacking time and delivery risk.
This is why almost every honest home bakery, ours included, quotes decorated cakes as “price depends on design”. It is not evasion. A 1 kg cake with a ganache finish and a 1 kg cake with a hand-sculpted topper are the same cake and completely different jobs.
3. The things that quietly add up
- Eggless is usually standard at home bakeries, not a surcharge.
- Atta or millet flour substitution — ask; at Annie's it is available on request.
- Sugar-free or no-added-sugar versions often cost more, because the substitutes do.
- Rush orders inside the normal lead time may carry a premium, if they can be taken at all.
- Delivery beyond the free radius, and beyond the base city.
How to brief a baker so the quote is accurate first time
Send these six things in your first message and you will usually get a firm price back in one reply instead of five:
- Date and time the cake is needed — not just the date.
- Guest count, and whether the cake is the dessert or an addition to one.
- Flavour, plus any dietary requirement: eggless, atta, reduced sugar, nut allergy.
- One or two reference images — and say what you like about them, because “this one” can mean the colour, the shape or the topper.
- Your budget range. This is the single most useful thing you can share. A good baker will design to it rather than quote past it.
- Delivery address or pickup, so the quote includes travel.
Storage, transport and the summer problem
A preservative-free cream cake wants a refrigerator and is at its best within 48 hours. Take it out about 20 minutes before cutting so the crumb softens — a fridge-cold cake tastes of very little.
Transporting a cake in a Chandigarh summer is its own challenge. Carry it flat on the car floor rather than a seat, run the air conditioning, and schedule delivery close to the cutting time rather than the morning of. If the event is outdoors in June, ask for a ganache or fondant finish instead of whipped cream — it holds its shape in heat where cream simply will not.
Ordering from Annie's
We bake in Chandigarh and deliver across Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula. Decorated cakes start at ₹1500/kg with the final price set by the design you choose; you will get a firm number before anything is baked. Simple cakes need 24 to 48 hours, custom designs three to five days, and festival weeks want considerably more notice.
The full menu lists every flavour and price. If you are still deciding between styles, our guides to baked and no-bake cheesecakes and to choosing a home bakery in the Tricity may help.

Order on WhatsAppFrequently asked questions
How many people does a 1 kg cake serve?
About 10 to 12 people as a celebration slice. If the cake is dessert after a full meal it will stretch further; if it is the main attraction at a tea party it will not.
How much does a custom cake cost in Chandigarh?
The base cake is priced per kilogram — at Annie's, decorated cakes start at ₹1500/kg — and decoration is added on top according to how much hand-work it takes. Fondant, sculpting and multi-tier construction cost significantly more than a smooth cream or ganache finish.
How far in advance should I order a custom cake?
Twenty-four to forty-eight hours for a simple cake, three to five days for a custom design, and one to three weeks during Diwali, Christmas and wedding season.
Is an eggless cake more expensive?
At most home bakeries in the Tricity, including ours, eggless is standard rather than a surcharge. Sugar-free versions often do cost more, because the substitute ingredients are dearer.
How should I store a fresh cream cake?
Refrigerated, and eaten within about 48 hours since there are no preservatives holding it together. Take it out roughly twenty minutes before cutting so the crumb comes back to life.
What is the cheapest way to feed a large group cake?
A decorated display tier plus plain sheet cakes of the same flavour, served from the kitchen. You get the photograph and the portions without paying to decorate every kilogram.
